About Matt Dean

Matt is a multi-instrumentalist hailing from Newcastle upon Tyne.

He moved, to follow his long-held dream of living in Ireland, in 2012 and is currently living in Listowel, Co. Kerry.

Matt has been playing traditional Irish music since the age of 8, starting out on the tin whistle and moving on to flute at the age of twelve. (Actively encouraged by Tyneside piccolo legend John Doonan.)

He also plays and teaches Bodhran, Banjo and Saxophone. Whilst still living in Newcastle, Matt was a founder member of ‘Folkestra North!’ and one of his earliest ventures into composing (2001) can be found on their album FCD178. In 2004/05 he was a finalist in the BBC Young Folk Awards.

He has been and continues to be an active member of Comhaltas CeoltóirI Éireann and as a member of the Newcastle branch of the organisation went on to win 12 All Ireland Medals, Competing in many Fleadh na hÉireann competitions.

Matt was a valued member of the ‘Echoes of Erin Concert Tour of both Britain (2010) and North America (2012).

Matt released his first album ‘Trasna na Farraige’ in 2012 which was exceptionally well received in traditional Irish circles. Over the past number of years Matt has developed his own unique style of playing and has gained valuable experience and knowledge playing many different styles of music.

His most recent development has been in creating scores for Television, movie and TV commercials. He still, however, maintains an interest in the continuing developing of the Traditional Irish culture, teaching flute and whistle to young people and adults in North Kerry and is currently Musical Director of the Listowel Branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóiri Éireann.

‘JOURNEYT’ is Matt’s latest album due for release on 1st December 2021. The album consists of his own compositions in a wide variety of styles and genre of music developed over a vast number of years and experiences with various bands and of varying cultures.
